Base Price $360.00

Dirk Van Erp emigrated from Holland to San Francisco where he established a now famous coppersmith shop (1910-1933) making household goods including his highly valued lighting products. His designs have come to be synonymous with the West Coast Arts & Crafts Movement. Van Erp's lamps consisted of hammered-copper bases and shades of translucent mica (also called isinglass) treated with shellac to give them an amber cast.

The Period Arts Fan Company has taken the liberty of designing two new ceiling fans that we feel lie well within the spirit of Van Erp. The Arcadia and the Bodega fans incorporate the hammered metal, exposed rivet assembly and warm mica diffusers used on the original lighting designs from his studio. Although authentic in design and appearance, these fans use modern motor design, electronic controls, energy-saving lighting and a lifetime motor warranty.

Includes 5" and 13" down rods, yielding 16" or 24" overall length.

The 450 or 451 light kit adds 3" to the length of this fan.

The Bodega fan is available with 42" or 52" blade spans in white, black, maple, mahogany or silver.

Ordering Guidelines and Selection Tips

In addition to style and design, there are several other considerations to make when selecting a fan for your specific installation.

Ceiling Height: The more space between the blades and the ceiling, the more effectively your fan will circulate and distribute air. However, building codes require that the blades of a ceiling fan be at least 7' above the Floor. Generally, we recommend hanging the fan as far down from the ceiling as is visually appropriate and maintaining the 7' blade clearance above the Floor. When dealing with higher ceilings, one third the distance to the Floor is a good guideline.

Blades on some Period Arts models (Prairie, Arcadia and Library) are positioned near the top of the body. When hung with the 3" down rod (18" overall Length), the blades on these models are very close to the ceiling, reducing the volume of air movement. Consequently, these models are best suited for ceiling Heights that can accommodate use of the 9" down rod (24" overall Length) or longer.

Blade Width: In nearly all cases, our 52" blade span is the most appropriate selection. The 42" blade span should be reserved for smaller rooms or narrow spaces (10' x 10' and smaller), or when airflow to the area above the blades is blocked or restricted by architectural elements (beams, walls, cabinetry, etc.). Occasionally two 42" fans may be a desirable alternative to one 52" fan.

Lighting: All Period Arts fans are available with standard incandescent lamping or with energy-saving compact Fluorescent lamping. Our CFLs provide 75% energy savings and lamp life 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. While they emit a well balanced, warm light quality, keep in mind that our CFLs are not dimmable. Period Art's opal glass lights generally function well as a primary light source for a space, but should not be depended on to be the only light source in a room. Our mica and stained glass shades are intended to function as decorative accent lights and must be supplemented with additional light sources for a room to be properly lit.

Controls: Period Arts fans do not use pull chains (except for the Industry model). Therefore, in order to operate your fan at different speeds and switch your light independently of your fan, you need to select the appropriate control. Please refer to our controls section (at left) for more information. Any control ordered with a fan that has been configured with an energy-saving CFL will be supplied in a non-dimming version. Period Arts Fan Company customer service is available to assist you with any additional questions you may have regarding selection of your ceiling fan. 1.888.588.3267 [email protected]
