About Sea Gull Lighting

Sea Gull Lighting began in Philadelphia in 1919 and grew into one of the largest suppliers of builder-grade decorative and functional lighting in North America. The name has since been retired: the line was folded into Generation Lighting under the Visual Comfort Group, and current product is sold as Generation Lighting or Visual Comfort Studio. If you are looking for Sea Gull today, you are almost always looking either for a replacement part for an existing fixture or for the Generation Lighting collection that succeeded it.

Collections

Ambiance LXThe long-running low-voltage cable and rail system, with miniature compartments, splicers and cable runs — still catalogued under Generation Lighting part numbers and a common source of replacement components.
LeoA pendant family carried under the Sea Gull heritage line at retail.
LarsonA flush mount family in the value range of the successor catalog.
AxiraA contemporary flush mount family.
EiseleA bath and vanity family.
MorrisonA pendant family at the upper end of the range.
BakerA chandelier family.
FoxdaleA chandelier family in the successor catalog.

What you get for the money

This was always a value-tier, high-volume line — the successor catalog runs from roughly $49 to a little over $1,000 at retail, with most flush mounts, vanities and pendants well under $400. The money buys coverage rather than craft: a single manufacturer supplying every fixture type in a house in one finish family, with the distribution and parts availability that comes from being part of the Visual Comfort Group. It is what production builders and remodelers use when the fixture package has to be complete, coordinated and inexpensive.

Where it gets used

Production and spec homes, apartment and condominium turns, and remodels where every room needs a fixture and the package is bought as a unit — foyer and dining chandeliers, hall and bedroom flush mounts, bath vanities, island pendants and exterior wall lanterns. The Ambiance LX low-voltage cable and rail system still turns up in kitchens and under-cabinet applications installed in the 1990s and 2000s, which is why parts for it remain a live request.

Specifying notes

The most important spec note is the naming: order against current Generation Lighting or Visual Comfort Studio part numbers, not legacy Sea Gull catalog numbers, because the Sea Gull name is no longer used on current product. Ambiance LX components — cable, splicers, compartments — are still catalogued under Generation Lighting numbers and some carry wet-location safety ratings, which is worth confirming per part. For anything on an existing Sea Gull fixture, have the original catalog number and a photograph ready; cross-referencing to a current part is usually possible but not always.

How it compares

Generation Lighting / Visual Comfort StudioNot really an alternative — it is the successor. Current product formerly sold as Sea Gull is catalogued here.
KichlerThe most direct competitor for a complete coordinated builder package, generally a step up in finish quality and price.
Progress LightingSimilar builder-grade breadth and price positioning, with strong distributor availability.
QuoizelComparable residential range with more traditional styling and a slightly higher price point.

Common questions about Sea Gull Lighting

Is Sea Gull Lighting still made?

Not under that name. Sea Gull was folded into Generation Lighting under the Visual Comfort Group, and current product is sold as Generation Lighting or Visual Comfort Studio. The Sea Gull name is no longer used on new product.

Where can I buy Sea Gull Lighting?

Brand Lighting is an authorized dealer for Generation Lighting, the successor line, and ships anywhere in the United States. Send us your original Sea Gull catalog number and we will identify the current equivalent.

Can I still get parts for my Sea Gull fixture?

Often, yes. Ambiance LX cable and rail components in particular are still catalogued under Generation Lighting part numbers. Send us the catalog number from the fixture and a photo and we will check availability.

Was Sea Gull Lighting good quality?

It was a builder-grade, high-volume line rather than a premium one — broad, coordinated and inexpensive. That is what it was designed to be, and the successor catalog occupies the same position.

Was Sea Gull Lighting made in the USA?

The company was founded in Philadelphia in 1919, but manufacturing moved offshore long before the brand was retired. Current Generation Lighting product is manufactured overseas.

Does Sea Gull Lighting have a warranty?

Warranty on current product is handled by Generation Lighting through the manufacturer and is supported when you buy from an authorized dealer such as Brand Lighting. Legacy Sea Gull fixtures are generally out of warranty, but replacement parts may still be available.

Quoting Sea Gull Lighting?
