Blade Span, Height and Clearances

Match blade span to the room, not to taste. Small bedrooms and baths take shorter spans, standard bedrooms and dining rooms take a middle span, and great rooms often do better with a long span or with two fans spaced apart than with one oversized unit. Height matters more than most buyers expect: keep blades at least seven feet above the floor, with eight to nine feet moving air noticeably better, and at least 18 inches clear of the nearest wall.

That clearance target decides the mount. Ceilings under about eight feet call for a flush or hugger mount. Above that, a downrod is sized to drop the blades into the eight-to-nine-foot band, which means longer rods on tall and vaulted ceilings. Sloped ceilings need a canopy rated for the pitch, and every fan has a maximum slope it will accept, so confirm that figure before ordering a rod. Angled mounting also changes the blade-to-wall distance.

The Outlet Box and Support

A fan cannot hang from a standard lighting box. The National Electrical Code requires an outlet box listed and marked for ceiling fan support, or that the fan be secured to the building structure. A box used as the sole support cannot carry a fan heavier than 70 pounds, and boxes designed for fans over 35 pounds must be marked with the maximum weight they will hold. The code also keeps paddle fans out of the zone three feet horizontally and eight feet vertically from a tub rim or shower threshold.

Outdoor Listings, Motors and Controls

Damp listed fans suit covered porches and patios where water never reaches them directly. Wet listed fans are built for rain and hose washdown, with sealed motors, corrosion-resistant housings, stainless hardware and all-weather blades. Near the coast, the wet listed model is often the smarter buy even under a roof, because salt air reaches everywhere the breeze does. An interior fan should never be installed outdoors, no matter how sheltered the ceiling looks.

Motor type shapes the experience. DC motors typically draw less power, run quieter and offer more speed steps, while AC motors are simpler and usually cost less. Either way, never run a fan motor through a standard incandescent dimmer; use the fan's own wall control, its remote, or a fan-rated speed control. Integrated LED light kits usually dim on a separate channel, so plan the switching before rough-in.

If rain, spray or hose washdown can hit the fan, it must be wet listed, with a sealed motor and weather-resistant blades and hardware. In coastal areas a wet listed fan is worth the added cost even under a solid roof.

Which direction should a ceiling fan turn?

In warm weather, run the fan counterclockwise as seen from below so it pushes air down and creates a cooling breeze. In cold weather, reverse it to clockwise at a low speed to draw air up and move warm air off the ceiling without a draft. Most fans have a reverse switch on the housing or on the remote.
