A lamp is the only fixture in most rooms a client can move, so it carries more of the load than people expect: reading light beside a chair, fill in a dark corner, and something to look at when the ceiling fixtures are off. Because lamps plug in rather than get wired, they are the fastest way to fix a room that already has its ceiling fixtures set. They are also the easiest thing to get wrong on scale. Height and Shade Proportion

The working rule for a table lamp beside a sofa or chair is that the bottom of the shade should land near the eye level of a seated person, generally fifty-eight to sixty-four inches off the floor once the table height is counted. That hides the bulb and puts light on the book instead of in the eyes. A bedside lamp sits lower, with the shade bottom near the shoulder of someone sitting up in bed.

Shade proportion follows simple ratios. A shade usually runs about twice the width of the lamp base and roughly a third of the lamp's total height, and it has to cover the socket and harp from a normal standing view. Drum shades throw light up and down; tapered empire shades concentrate it downward. A floor lamp beside a reading chair works best with the light source just behind the shoulder.

Bulbs, Switching, and Dimming

Most portable fixtures still take standard sockets, which is an advantage, because you choose the bulb. Twenty-seven hundred Kelvin matches the warm light people expect from a lamp, and a bulb rated ninety CRI or better keeps upholstery and wood tones honest. Check the base type before buying spares, since candelabra and medium bases are both common, and respect the wattage printed on the socket label, particularly inside a small or closed shade.

Switching varies more than buyers expect. Three-way sockets need three-way bulbs to give all three levels. Lamps with integrated LED often dim from a slider or touch control on the fixture and should not be put on a wall dimmer. If you want a lamp controlled from the wall, confirm the outlet is switched, or use a plug-in dimmer rated for that load and light source.

What Changes as You Move Up

Weight is the honest tell. Better lamps use cast metal, solid stone, or thick glass bases that stay put when a cord gets tugged, with heavier sockets, jacketed cord, and a real harp and finial rather than a molded assembly. Hand-applied finishes, hand-blown glass, and stone with visible veining vary piece to piece. Value lines still earn their place on repeating projects where a matched pair matters more than a one-off base.
